Almost every website includes the phrase "We welcome your feedback." At Coriolis we take this one step further. We're in the business of answering questions and we'll try to answer yours. We will attempt to answer any short, clear and simple question you have on any FMCG-related subject. However please keep in mind that long, unclear and complex question are how we pay the bills. Just email us your question and we'll try to answer it. Don't worry - your name and company will remain anonymous. email: info@coriolisresearch.com We have answers...
A: 732 In 2001, New Zealand has 382 wineries while Australia has 350. However, the plot thickens when we look at the area under vine: New Zealand has only 15,800 ha while Australia has a massive 154,200 ha. So obviously Australian wineries are much larger than New Zealand ones. Q: How big is the Malaysian foodservice market? A: US$3.8b Key sectors: restaurants 80%, hotel and resorts 15% and institutional catering sector 5%. As an interesting side note, KFC is the market leader with 300+ outlets, follwed by McDonalds with 163. Q: Who are the leaders in the global ice cream market? A: Unilever 20%, Nestle 16%, Scholler 2% for 2002. No other single company controls over 2% Q: Do you have a slide (one page) that shows the annual growth rate of private label sales in Australia? A: Private label has been shrinking in Australia, but growing in New Zealand. This chart should answer your question. Q: I read your excellent report on Aldi in Australia. Do you have any information on Aldi's market share in other countries? A: In countries where Aldi has established itself, it's market share varies from 0.6% in the United States to 13% in Austria. This chart should help answer your question. Q: I just have a couple of questions if I may; How big is the New Zealand Foodservice market? What is the break down of the sectors within it? A: You will be happy to know we have released our foodservice report to the general public. It is available here. Q: How many people are employed in retail in Australia? A: 1,440,000 Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics Q: What percent of Australian GDP does retail represent? A: 5% (remember GDP measures value-added not total turnover) Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics Q: What are the major challenges facing ice cream manufacturers? A: Generally the free answers
are simple and short, and the more complex questions are how we make
money, but here's a stab at it:
Q: Do supermarkets In New Zealand and Australia try to work on achieving an overall retailer margin percentage on all their products sold and if so approximately what would that be? If not what is approximately lowest to highest? A: Retailers worldwide try to achieve an overall target gross and net margin which vary by chain. Their actual results can be found in their annual reports (if they are publicly listed). Target margins vary by country as wage rates differ (labour being the largest controllable cost, with higher wages being passed on to consumers through higher margins) and also vary by store format (e.g. warehouse store vs. full line supermarket). Margins also vary by department and category, with higher margins taken in higher labour or cost (e.g. shrink in produce, theft with razor blades). Q: I'm interested in getting
the back issues (earlier than 2001) of your newsletter. Could you please
email them to me? A: The newsletter began in
2001. Q: I represent a small company that is currently "studying" the Aust & NZ market and finding out ways to break in. What distribution channels are available? (e.g. directly to retailer, through a broker, etc.) I interested in finding out the various channels available to a marketer of products especially in the Health & Beauty segment. A: Your question is probably too complex to answer for free under the "questions" proposition on the website, but for additional free material try:
3. Have a look on the AFGC
or FGCNZ websites. Q: Could you please provide me with a list of all the FMCG companies in Australia and New Zealand? A: We've been struggling with your
request. The list is just too long and we don't have a copy in electronic
format. Q: Can you please advise
how big the petfood market is in Australia? A: Pet Needs Sales A$1,085 billion in 2002 +6.9% growth vs. 2001 Sorry we don't have anything
more current close at hand. Q: We have read your report on Tesco with great interest. Having read all I can on Tesco I think it is the best report on the retailer I have seen so far. I have one question about the report. You mention that Tesco has identified a limited number of consumer groups, one of them being Traditional. What does the traditional group mean? Is it couples slightly older than baby-boomers that have simple, mainstream eating habits? A: Our understanding is that the group formerly known as elderly is now known in Tesco "marketing-speak" as "traditional." It's not much more complicated than that. Have you seen the Tesco Clubcard book? Q: Do you know which FMCG brands in Australia/NZ currently have a share of about 3% of their market. I want to draw a comparison with the stature of an IT services Client we are working with. Any help greatly appreciated. A: This should help your argument... Soft Drinks Q: How big are the New Zealand and Australian cracker/savoury biscuit markets? A: NZ$285m in 2005 p.s. thanks for the free package of biscuits - those who send free food always get their questions answered Source: Aztec Q: What are the main retail stores selling canned fruit in Australia? and can you give me a list of average prices (a website where i can find this information would be helpful)? A: (a) Woolworths, Coles, Metcash/IGA, Franklins and Aldi (b) We don't have this data close at hand and there is no website we are aware of with this information (though we wish there was...) Q: Do you know where I can receive an Overview of the Canadian supermarket industry, and I was wondering how would a company like Aldi do in the Canadian market. A: Have you read our report on Loblaw? Q: I have just been reading your report "Mapping the structure of the NZ food and beverage industry", and I have come across the $220 million value you have put on nz domestic seafood retail for that year. Do you have any further breakdown of this value according to seafood species/product? A: No. From memory we proposed additional research but the Government's Food & Beverage Taskforce assigned that work to its "markets working group." As far as we know nothing like what you propose currently exists. However, we could be wrong - if you find it can you forward it to us?
A: 2008. We would encourage you to contact Costco directly and ask them to open a store near you: https://www.costco.com/CustomerService/EmailUs.aspx?secure=1 Q: Having read your site in connection with Costco coming to Australia. Is this just wishful thinking or simply coaxing? Our family would indeed appreciate Costco coming to Sydney as we miss it enormously (U.S. and Canada). I tried emailing their office but it insisted on having a phone nr. and yet would not recognize mine here. Hope to hear some good news soon. A: Your wishes have come true. Q: I've reviewed your online site about Costco coming to Australasia. What is the word today about Costco coming to NZed? I LOVE Costco and no doubt all of New Zealand and Australia will too (except for the over-priced competitors). Bring it on!!! A: Sooner rather than later? Q: When do you think Costco will open in Australia? A: Next year some time (2009). R: Yippee!! I can't wait. I shop in CostCo when I'm in the States and just love it!!.............. Q: Is there a Costco anywhere near Brisbane/Sydney, Australia? A: Not yet. Q: I was reading your report and I was wondering when do you forsee the opening of Costcos stores in Australia particularly in Sydney. A: As above. Q: Where are the Costco stores to open in Australia and what is the expected date? A: As above. Q: Could you please tell me if Costco is in Australia yet? If not, are there any definite plans when it would be? A: As above. People sure do love Costco. Q: So happy to hear that CostCo is coming to Australia, my question is where in NSW central coast will be the nearest one to me. And will it be set up the same as the USA eg Kirkland Brand. hope it will be soon. thanks. A: As above. Q: I am writing to request a newsletter and regular updates regarding the opening of a Costco store in Australia. If email newsletters are available, I would be happy to be added to a mailing list. All the best with this wonderful project. A: We are a market research firm targeting business, and are not affiliated with Costco in any way. You may want to contact the company directly or watch in your local paper for more detailed information. Q: I live on the Gold Coast Queensland Australia and I have just read your report on Costco coming to Australia. I would like to be able to sign up for a membership. I have looked at Costco's web sight and there is no area to do this. Could you help me? A: We're just a market research firm who wrote a report on Costco. We are not Costco. All we know is what we read in the papers, which say Costco is opening in Australia next year if Coles and Woolworths don't stop them. If you really want one in your area, you may want to call your local politician and tell them to stop getting in the way of low prices. Q: I am inquiring about Costco coming into New Zealand. I recently moved to Auckland from Osaka Japan where my family and I have been members of Costco since it originally opened in Japan, until we moved to N.Z.. We are interested as are some friends of ours when it is thinking of coming into the nation. I have read the competition believes it will never come but then I also heard that in Japan. COSTCO I BELIEVE WOULD HAS POTENTIAL IN THIS CITY OF 1.2MILLION. A: We share your sentiments. We expect they will enter this market at some point, though their success (or lack thereof) in Australia will obviously influence the outcome. Note: We only publish a few of the many requests we get from Australians for Costco stores in their area. If these responses are anything to go by, we're happy predicting Costco will achieve great success in Australia. Q: Yah can you please tell me the growth rate (in percentage) of Woolworths supermarkets in last 10 years. 1997 to 2007 and how many new outlets have they open in these years. A: Which growth metric do you want? Sales, EBITDA, store numbers? When you say opened, does that include acquisitions? When you say "supermarkets" do you mean supermarkets, Woolworth's definition of supermarkets, liquor and fuel, or Woolworths Limited as a whole? Have you looked in their annual report? Q: I am doing survey part of my marketing graduation and the
topic "chewing and bubble gum market in New A: 1. Wrigley; 2. wrigley 99.3% Ferndale 0.7% Source: Aztec Q: I am food technology student from XXXX University, do you have any New Zealand sales figures for chewing gum. Or even better know how many people consume chewing gum daily in New Zealand? A: Part 1: NZ$20.2m. Part 2: No. What is it with XXXX University and chewing gum? Q: How big is the Australian baby food market? A: $172.8m MAT Oct 2002 This number includes infant formula ($78.8m), wet baby food ($76.9m), dry baby food ($12.4m) and fluid/juice ($4.7m). Q: Are you able to advise the percent market share for infant formula for each of the main companies in Australia (ie. Heinz-Watties, Nestle, Nutricia)? A: Infant Formula Corporate Share:
Grocery Value $78.8m Q: Is grocery value the
total value of the market at retail level? (eg. if one tin of infant
formula costs the consumer at the supermarket $17.00, then the number
of tins of infant formula sold is $78.8m / $17.00 = 4.64m tins)? A: Yes.
Q: Do you also have infant formula information for New Zealand? Dollar sales NZ$27,100,651 Q: Are you able to advise the percent market share for wet and frozen baby food for each of the main companies in Australia (ie. Motherly, Golden Circle, Only Organics, Heinz-Watties, Nestle, Nutricia)? How much money is spend in in each State on baby food (only wet or frozen)? Can you tell me year by year for the last 10 years the amount of money spend on wet baby food? A: We primarily conduct qualitative market research (e.g. focus groups) and management consulting (e.g. buy XYZ). We don't create or aggregate primary data (e.g. supermarket scan data), we just have access to the basic annual published summaries (e.g. Foodweek Yearbook). Your questions are beyond the level of our "free" data and to answer them we would have to pay Aztec or ACNielsen a significant sum. You may want to try either of them or your local business school library? Sorry we couldn't be of more help. Q: I want to know what is actually in baby food… What are the additives used? I have been told in NZ not all additives have to be declared on the label??? How else can it sit on a shelf for 3 years?? A: Have a look at the relevant sections from the ANZFA codes. From a brief reading, it appears everything needs to be declared (other than potentially details on flavours?). If you believe a company is not declaring an ingredient, I would immediately raise this issue with the ANZFA. They also have a piece of market research they conducted about labeling for infants available on their site which may interest you. You may be underestimating the power of very high temperatures and an oxygen free environment. Canning was invested by Nicolas Appert in 1809 in response to Napoleon's offer of a 12,000 franc prize to whomever could provide a way to preserve food for his troops in the field. The scientific support for the concept was later provided by Louis Pasteur in 1862. Let us know if you need any additional information. Q: I've been looking at a number of your answers to queries about the infant formula markets in NZ / Aust. Do you have any 2005 figures ? A: Enough is enough with the baby food questions already. Q: How big is the New Zealand baby food market? Are you able to advise the percent market share for baby food for each of the main companies in New Zealand? A: "Enough is enough with the baby food questions already." Q: What is the current market share for baby food companies in New Zealand. Heinz, Watties, etc A: See above. Q: I am a student at O University doing a research assignment. I was wondering if you have information regarding the baby food market in New Zealand. Information such as the percentage of salesetc. A: As we said above, no more baby food questions, we are SOOOOO sick of them. R: If your not willing to at least try to help, dont advertise that you do so. A simple No sorry we dont have any information would have been sufficient. A: You appear to have found our site via a Google search for "baby food," rather than visiting us by design. You might want to explore the whole site and spend some time reviewing the amount of complementary information we give away. We often spend weeks working on this material, only to make it publicly available to all. Feel free to benchmark our complementary research offering with that of any other Australasian management consultant/market research competitors. However, though we said "enough is enough" above, this obviously isn't clear enough to today's university student. Therefore: attention all university students: "enough is enough" means "baby food questions are banned." Q:Awesome website - the best I have come across! Perhaps you can answer my question: In NZ & Australian Grocery, what is the combined value of the Oven/BBQ cleaner market? Who are the top 3 brand leaders? A: People who say nice things about all the hard work on the website always get their questions answered. We don't have the latest Nielsen MID, so this is somewhat old, but should do: Mr Muscle 41% NZ$750m (Source: Nielsen) Q: I am applying for Sales vacancies in the BOP area, NZ, within the FMCG market and wonder if you could provide me with the Top 20 FMCG Companies (together with contacts if possible, ie e-mail addresses, websites etc)? A: Slightly old, but this should work... HEINZ WATTIE'S LTD Note this is total NZ not BOP. Google can do the rest. Q: I am trying to get an idea of the difference in refrigerated vs. non-refrigerated transport costs (by truck) for packaged food sold in grocery stores? A: We are unaware of any report on this subject, so we asked a couple of people who would know and got a range of +20-30%. Please let us know if you get a clearer answer. Q: What does MAT sales mean?? A: Moving Annual Total (aka last 12 months) Q: What city/state in Australia contains the highest number of FMCG companies? Melbourne or Sydney? A:

A: We assume you have seen our report on this subject (available here). Q: Please will you email a list of co-packers in Maryland and Virginia who prepare entrees (dishes with Meat and Meatless dishess for Vegetarians)? I need this list as soon as possible. A: We're really sorry, but there are some questions even the great minds at Coriolis can not answer. Q: Do you have any general information about the cost breakdowns in UK supermarkets? Labour/Transport/Goods etc.. I am particularly interested in Tescos? A: Your question is quite vague - can you restate it? Have you read our Tesco report, available here? A: Please just call with questions like this. Q: I am studying for an advertising major at XXXX. I am required to undergo a strategic advertising agency pitch. My group and I have started an agency from the ground up and we are pitching our business towards juice bars.
